I agree. I actually pull on my experience from the manufacturing and distribution industries all the time for IT project management. There's so many problems that IT tries to solve regarding scheduling, logistics, forecasting, and other areas that other industries already poured tons of thinking into. We need to be tapping those industries.

It is often the case that we deal with the symptom rather than the cause. The biggest issue at presents appears to be clients who not gathered the appropriate evidence and developed a poor business case.

The construction industry has went through similar issue and has developed a number of innovative approaches to dealing with this and trying to develop smart clients. One example of this is the Construction Clients Charter.

“By signing up to the Construction Clients’ Charter, construction industry clients will be making a clear statement of their commitment to improve their own performance”. http://www.clientsuccess.org.uk/Introduction.htm

The IT industry could maybe learn a thing or two from its much older project based uncle.
